Otus Supply - review

Mark and I had heard from a number of people how great the food was at Otus Supply in Ferndale, but the menu did not genuinely interest us. When our daughter, Alex, told us how good she thought it was, we decided to give it a try since our tastes in food are similar. It was hard for us to discern what the dishes would taste like so we had lots of questions for our server. She was very good at describing the dishes and helping us decide how many we needed since we wanted to explore the small plate selections.

Our first choice was Romanesco, which we discovered tastes likes cauliflower and broccoli were cross-pollinated to create a new vegetable. Meyer lemon, yogurt, sunflower seeds and Calabrian chili combined made a creamy, slightly tart and spicy sauce. I thought it was a little too spicy for me, but Mark didn't believe that it was very spicy, which is typical of our differing taste buds. Our next selection was zucchini fritters. Lightly breaded and fried, the fritters were served with garbanzo beans, fennel, and parsley mayonnaise. The fennel added a note of licorice, and the parsley mayo was refreshing. Another hit on our list.

Lastly, we chose Malfade, which is pasta with curly edges. The sauce of shredded pork, diced carrots, diced onions, and tomatoes. I believe roasted tomatoes were used to give it a vibrant, concentrated tomato flavor. I think I also detected a hint of cinnamon. It was delicious. I am sure we will go back, especially to taste some of the other small plates.
